About the coalition

Our Mission
The Ottawa Coalition for the Prevention of Low Birth Weight promotes healthy births by increasing awareness of the impact of low birth weight on babies, their families and communities, the factors that contribute to low birth weight and the steps that can be taken to reduce its incidence.

Our Philosophy
The Ottawa Coalition for the Prevention of Low Birth Weight understands the value and the need of engaging the whole community in supporting healthy birth outcomes. Healthy birth weight is the most important goal for a child. Indeed, a healthy birth weight is essential for optimum child development and is the first precursor to life-long health.

Our History
We are a multi-sectoral coalition of agencies, health care providers, interested individuals and organizations. The prevention of low birth weight has been a collaborative effort in the Ottawa region for close to a decade. In October, 1999 and January, 2000 the Region of Ottawa-Carleton Health Department organized a forum of health and social service providers and other community partners to identity strategies for reducing the low birth weight rate in the community. The development of a Coalition of interested stakeholders was the first strategy.

Building on the research base developed through earlier work in Ontario and the Ottawa community, the Coalition decided to implement a social marketing campaign. The main focus of this campaign was to sensitize members of the community to the message that "Being born too small leads to problems later in life". The Coalition was awarded a grant from the Success by 6 National Child Benefit Funding to accomplish this project.
